What is colostrum?

Colostrum is emerging as one of the most distinctive natural ingredients in modern skincare. Long valued on farms for its richness, this first milk is now drawing thoughtful attention in cosmetic science.

What is colostrum?

Colostrum is the first milk mammals produce in the hours after giving birth. Naturally dense and nutrient rich, it contains proteins, peptides, amino acids, vitamins and minerals that support early life. In cosmetic contexts, its profile has become an area of interest.

At Elm Lab, we work exclusively with A2 colostrum from our own herd on the Taieri Plain in Otago, New Zealand. A2 cows produce only the A2 beta casein protein, a naturally occurring variant that aligns with our commitment to gentle, barrier-first skincare.

How is colostrum different from regular milk?

Colostrum is compositionally distinct from mature milk. Dairy science shows that it naturally contains:
• higher levels of proteins and peptides;
• a broader spectrum of bioactive components; and
• a richer, more concentrated texture.

These characteristics set colostrum apart from mature milk and contribute to its growing relevance in modern formulation.

Why is colostrum used in skincare products?

In cosmetic formulations, colostrum is often included for its naturally rich composition. It is valued for its ability to help:
• support hydration and moisture retention;
• maintain skin comfort;
• contribute to a healthy-looking barrier; and
• enhance the appearance of radiance and suppleness.

These qualities reflect why colostrum is becoming a thoughtful choice for formulators seeking gentle, multi-component ingredients that support the skin’s everyday comfort.

While research on topical colostrum is still emerging, several of its naturally occurring components have been examined in in-vitro settings. It’s an area Elm Lab is committed to exploring with care and rigour as the field evolves.

Is colostrum safe to use on the face?

When processed and formulated correctly, colostrum can be safely incorporated into cosmetic products. At Elm Lab, our A2 colostrum is handled under strict quality controls and blended into formulations designed for sensitive skin and suitable for use on both the face and body. Each product is dermatologically patch tested on sensitive skin volunteers and our baby range is also paediatrician tested, reflecting our commitment to creating gentle, well tolerated skincare for all ages.

How is colostrum different from other active skincare ingredients?

Colostrum is not a single isolated molecule; it is a naturally bioactive, multi-component ingredient with a composition unlike anything else used in modern skincare. Rather than behaving like a conventional active, it offers a spectrum of proteins, peptides, fats and micronutrients that occur together in their natural state. This distinctive profile is part of a wider movement toward ingredients that bring complexity, depth and gentle support to cosmetic formulation.

Summary

Colostrum is a rare, naturally rich ingredient with deep roots in farming and a growing relevance in modern skincare. Its composition offers a gentle, multi-dimensional profile that aligns with the needs of sensitive skin, even as research continues to evolve. At Elm Lab, we pair A2 colostrum from our family farm with thoughtful, science-led formulation to explore how this remarkable ingredient can support skin with clarity, care and integrity.
